Blackberries
Most problem blackberries in our area are the aggressive Himilayan non-native variety. They can take over pastures and property rather quickly and have adverse effects on property use and value. The two positive things about the himilalyn blackberry are the tasty fantastic fruit which makes great pies and the plants provide habitat for many birds and animals provided you can keep the plants in check.
We are often asked...when is the best time to control blackberries? The answer is once they have come out of dormancy in the spring and flowered through fall before the first hard freeze. The plants need to be actively growing so that they take in the systemic herbicide. There are different materials to use for different times of the year as well as different growing locations of the berries. If they are growing next to or over a body of water like a pond or creek, then we need to use an aquatic herbicide so we do not injure the sensitive ecosystem.
