Scotch Broom
Because of the pretty yellow flowers, Scotch broom was introduced as an ornamental. It has become an aggressive and invasive weed in our area and throughout much of California. This weed can be of extreme fire danger in later summer months, easily growing over 6 feet tall. It is highly flammable due to its oils and contributes to wildfires burning much hotter and more intense. Due to its aggressive growth and prolific seed bank which last for many years, it crowds out beneficial native vegetation.
Actually there are three species of Broom - Scotch, Spanish and French Broom - growing here in our foothill region. Control of this plant is critical for proper fire management on your property. Management technology for Broom allows for control of this plant without disturbing other desirable species growing along side.
There is an excellent selective herbicide called Milestone from DowAgro Sciences that does a great job controlling broom species on both a post and pre-emergent basis.
