Yellow Starthistle
Yellow Starthistle (YST) covers approximately 15 million acres throughout California. It first showed up in the Marysville area around the time of the gold rush. It is believed to come in the state as a contaminate in alfalfa which was inadvertently imported from the Mediterranean area where it is native. YST is considered a weed for many reasons. It is poisonous to horses, has harmful spines that cause eye injuries to grazing animals, consumes 7 -8 inches of annual rainfall at a time when beneficial plants need water the most, displaces native vegetation upsetting the ecosystem and substantially reduces land value.
All Seasons Weed Control, Inc applies Transline or Milestone manufactured by Dow Agro Sciences for selective control of yellow starthistle. Selective control means controlling the YST without killing off all the grasses or other beneficial plants. Areas for selective control include pastures, rangeland, habitat restoration, landscape, and unimproved areas. To determine which materials to use contact All Seasons Weed Control, Inc for a free consultation and estimate. For detailed information regarding YST please click on the provided link from UC Davis.
